GAME 1 VS PARKWAY CHRISTIAN

On Friday evening, after the previously scheduled game with Roeper was canceled, the Southfield Christian middle school Eagles finally took the field for the first game of the 2021 season. The Eagles defeated Parkway Christian by a score of 8-0.

Makai Burks and Luke Cairo combined in goal for the shutout. Brock Bushey led the team with four goals, along with two more from center midfielder Trey Ehlen. Eric Webber added a goal and two assists. Ethan Gundlach contributed an assist in the effort and Liam Balligian scored late to finish the contest, assisted on that play by Jude Anderson. The defense played well as a collective group, limiting the opponents’ opportunities to a handful of chances.

Current record: 1-0

GAME 2 VS INTER-CITY

On Tuesday evening, the Eagles faced off against visiting Inter-City Baptist. After making numerous saves, Luke Cairo finally conceded two goals in the first half. In the second half, Makai Birks continued the solid play in goal and allowed one additional score.

Bennett Bushey finally pierced the strong defensive line and reduced the Charger lead to just 2 more than halfway through the second half off a nice assist from older brother Brock. Eric Webber had a good chance to cut the lead to one late in the second half but a debatable offside call ended that threat, and the Eagles‘ chances. The team prepares to bounce back Thursday when they compete at home again against Novi Christian.

Current record: 1-1

GAME 3 VS NOVI CHRISTIAN

The Eagles competed in a heated game against visiting Novi Christian on Thursday evening, and the teams were very closely matched. After SCS tied the game at 3-3 midway through the second half, the team eventually conceded two late goals and lost by a score of 5-3.

Defender Matthew Abazi and Goalie Luke Cairo teamed up to somehow keep an early goal from crossing the goal line. Brock Bushey scored twice in the first half to stake the team to an early 2-1 lead.

Eric Webber tied the score at 3-3 in the second half to pull the Eagles even once more. A few terrific chances by Trey Ehlen and Bennett Bushey were just not meant to be this time around, and the team couldn't close the margin down the stretch.

Next up is a contest against Oakland away on Monday afternoon.

Current record: 1-2

GAME 4: OAKLAND CHRISTIAN

Limited information available for. this contest. The Eagles lost 3-0 away at the Lancers.

Current record: 1-3

GAME 5: PLYMOUTH CHRISTIAN

On Monday evening, the Eagles took on rival Plymouth Christian at home. It was a tough outing for the team, as PCA kept possession of the ball in Scs’s zone for the majority of the match. Both Makai Birks and Luke Cairo had very busy and productive nights in goal, making numerous saves to extend the game to full-time. Trey Ehlen was finally able to get the Eagles on the board in the second half with a well-played breakaway goal. As a whole, the team felt they could’ve performed much better than the 9-1 final score reflected. The team will regroup and play away at Inter-City on Thursday.

Current record: 1-4

GAME 6: INTER-CITY

On Thursday afternoon, the Eagles traveled down for a rematch at Inter-City. The Chargers scored quickly to take the lead, but Brock Bushey evened the score himself with a beautiful long free kick that eluded the opposing goalie. The rest of the first half was dominated by IC and some defensive errors led to three more Charger goals.

The second half was a completely different story and the Eagles controlled the game from the whistle. Numerous terrific opportunities came up just short as the team pounded the goal and controlled possession, showing much more aggression and thought on the defensive side of the ball as well.

The final score remained 4-1 as neither team found the net after halftime, though the Eagles had to feel good about how they had finished.

Current record: 1-5

GAME 7: PLYMOUTH CHRISTIAN

On Monday evening the team traveled to play the second match of the year against Plymouth Christian. Once again, their opponents got off to a fast start and capitalized on some early errors to spring out to a 4-0 lead at the break.

As they have often this season, the Eagles fought hard in the second half and played nearly evenly with the opposition. Brock Bushey scored two goals on a breakaway and a well-placed direct kick. Luke Cairo played the entire contest in goal, stopping multiple shots. The final score of 7-2 could have been even closer based on the hustle and efforts of the players, with a few opportunities coming up just short. The teams looks to improve even further when they visit Novi Christian on Thursday.

Current record: 1-6

GAME 8: NOVI CHRISTIAN

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, on a muddy field at Novi Christian, the Eagles played well to a 2-2 draw against a team that beat them previously this season.

After falling behind 1-0 early, SCS controlled most of the first half, creating many quality opportunities but just falling short.

After the break, Trey Ehlen set up Bennett Bushey for a terrific breakaway goal that evened the score at one apiece.

Novi Christian went back on top with a goal of their own minutes later. The scoring was completed when Brock Bushey placed a perfect free kick over the goalie’s head and into the top of the net.

Several last minute chances to grab the victory fell just short, complicated by the messy turf. The team travels next to Roeper for another game on Friday.

Current record: 1-6-1

GAME 9: ROEPER

On Friday afternoon, the SCS Eagles played an exciting back and forth game on the turf against Roeper, who had only lost once previously in 8 games accordingly to the opposing coach. The Eagles played a tremendous first half, with Jude Anderson scoring the lone goal on a corner kick from Trey Ehlen.

After a half hour thunder delay, the team started a little slower in the second half, with Roeper scoring two goals in succession, despite heroic attempts from Makai Birks and Luke Cairo to keep it from crossing the line on the second of the two.

With about 10 minutes to play, Brock Bushey attacked from the left side to equalize at 2-2. Several chances by both sides to finish out the game came just shy. The Eagles play their final match of the season on Monday at home against Oakland Christian.

Current record: 1-6-2

GAME 10: ROEPER

On Monday afternoon, the team played a rematch against visiting Oakland Christian, who defeated the Eagles 3-0 in the initial meeting earlier in the year. SCS came out strong in the first half, dominating possessions and having higher energy than their opponents, and cruised to a 1-0 margin at the half thanks to a goal from Eric Webber.

After the break, OCS evened the score and seemed poised to take the lead. But a good through ball by Trey Ehlen was put into the back of the net by Bennett Bushey midway through the second half to retake the lead. The Lancers answered one more time in the final ten minutes of the game, and the Eagles settled for a third straight 2-2 tie to end the season.

The progress the team made over the last several games was evident, as they went undefeated over their last three contests, including against two teams that had outscored them earlier in the year. The 8th graders will be missed as they move on to high school in the fall and hopefully continue to compete at the varsity level, but the future is bright for the middle school team with many returning players next season.

Current record: 1-6-3
